How update version Process Works
The following diagram shows how KubeDB Enterprise operator used to update the version of MariaDB. Open the image in a new tab to see the enlarged version.

The updating process consists of the following steps:
At first, a user creates a
MariaDBCustom Resource (CR).KubeDBCommunity operator watches theMariaDBCR.When the operator finds a
MariaDBCR, it creates required number ofStatefulSetsand related necessary stuff like secrets, services, etc. Then, in order to update the version of the
MariaDBdatabase the user creates aMariaDBOpsRequestCR with the desired version.KubeDBEnterprise operator watches theMariaDBOpsRequestCR.When it finds a
MariaDBOpsRequestCR, it halts theMariaDBobject which is referred from theMariaDBOpsRequest. So, theKubeDBCommunity operator doesn’t perform any operations on theMariaDBobject during the updating process.By looking at the target version from
MariaDBOpsRequestCR,KubeDBEnterprise operator updates the images of all theStatefulSets. After each image update, the operator performs some checks such as if the oplog is synced and database size is almost same or not. After successfully updating the
StatefulSetsand theirPodsimages, theKubeDBEnterprise operator updates the image of theMariaDBobject to reflect the updated state of the database. After successfully updating of
MariaDBobject, theKubeDBEnterprise operator resumes theMariaDBobject so that theKubeDBCommunity operator can resume its usual operations.
In the next doc, we are going to show a step by step guide on updating of a MariaDB database using update operation.
